Promotion Requirements

Learners are assesed according to levels in grade RR to grade 3
and according to percentages in grades 4 to grade 12.

Pre-School Levels (Grade RR - Grade R)

Level Description
1 Needs continuous assistance and support.
2 Good progress - working on developing skill and / or concept.
3 Achieved - Independently demonstrates skill and / or understanding of concept.

Foundation Phase Levels (Grade 1 - Grade 3)

Level Description
1 The student understands very little of the taught content and is unable to use the taught skills.
2 The student understands a little, but not much, of the taught content. The student cannot use the taught skills, even when the teacher assists.
3 The student has limited understanding of most of the taught content, OR has mixed understanding, with some areas being a level 2, and others being acceptable (level 4 or above).
The student can only use the taught skills fully if the teacher assists.
4 Overall, the student understands the taught content, and can use the taught skills in the types of situations which were practiced in class. There may be some content or skill which is weaker, but there are no areas of major concern.
In situations involving the taught content and skills, the student occasionally analyses situations, combines different content and skills, and makes conclusions based on evaluation of all available data.
5 The student fully understands the taught content, and can use the taught skills in a few different types of situations.
In situations involving the taught content and skills, the student usually analyses situations, combines different content and skills, and makes conclusions based on evaluation of all available data.
The student occasionally provides their own creative solutions, useful ideas, and new ways of looking at things.
6 The student fully understands the taught content, and can use the taught skills in many different types of situations.
In situations involving the taught content and skills, the student always analyses situations, combines different content and skills, and makes conclusions based on evaluation of all available data.
The student usually provides their own creative solutions, useful ideas, and new ways of looking at things.
7 The student fully understands the taught content, and can use the taught skills in many different types of situations, hardly ever making mistakes or omissions.
In situations involving the taught content and skills, the student always analyses situations, combines different content and skills, and makes conclusions based on evaluation of all available data.
The student always provides their own creative solutions, useful ideas, and new ways of looking at things. They delve deeper and apply higher order thinking consistently.
The student always produces work of high quality.

Requirements to pass Pre-primary [Grade R]

A grade R learner shall be promoted if:
  • The learner has undergone a school readiness test and the school's inclusion committee has determined that the child is sufficiently equipped to advance to Grade 1.

Requirements to pass Foundation Phase [Grade 1 ~ 3]

A grade 1 pass shall be issued to a learner who has complied with the following requirements:
  • Obtained at least a level 4 in English.
  • Obtained at least a level 3 in Mathematics.

A grade 2/3 pass shall be issued to a learner who has complied with the following requirements:
  • Obtained at least a level 4 in English.
  • Obtained at least a level 3 in Afrikaans.
  • Obtained at least a level 3 in Mathematics.

Requirements to pass Intermediate Phase [Grade 4 ~ 6]

A grade 4/5/6 pass shall be issued to a learner who has complied with the following requirements in not fewer than five (5) learning areas:
  • Obtained at least 50% in English.
  • Obtained at least 40% in Afrikaans FAL.
  • Obtained at least 40% in Mathematics.
  • Obtained at least 40% in at least two of the following learning areas:
    • Natural Sciences
    • Social Sciences
    • Life Skills

Life Skills is made up of: Creative Art [30%], Physical Movement [20%], Life Bible Orientation [50%].
Creative Art is divided into: Art [50%] and Music & Drama [50%].

~ Social Science - This learning area covers History and Geography
~ Natural Science - This learning area covers Life Sciences and Physical Science
~ Arts and Culture - This learning area covers Art, Music and Drama
~ Economic Management Science - This learning area covers Business Studies and Accounting

Requirements to pass Grade 7 ~ 9

A grade 7/8/9 pass shall be issued to a learner who has complied with the following requirements in not fewer than nine (9) learning areas:
  • Obtained at least 50% in English.
  • Obtained at least 40% in Afrikaans FAL.
  • Obtained at least 40% in Mathematics.
  • Obtained at least 40% in three (3) learning areas other than English, Afrikaans FAL and Mathematics.
  • Obtained at least 30% in two (2) learning areas other than English, Afrikaans FAL and Mathematics.

Subjects offered for Grade 10 ~ 12

Core subjects:
~ English as Home Language
~ Afrikaans as First Additional Language
~ Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy
~ Life Orientation

Entry requirements:
We have entry requirements for the following subjects
~ Mathematics - a minimum of 55% in Grade 9 in Mathematics
~ Accounting - a minimum of 55% in Grade 9 in Mathematics and 60% promotion mark in EMS
~ Physical Science - a minimum of 55% in Grade 9 in Mathematics and 60% promotion mark in NS

Requirements to pass Grade 10 ~ 12

A grade 10/11/12 pass shall be issued to a learner who has complied with the following requirements in not fewer than seven (7) learning areas:
  • Obtained at least 40% in English Home Language.
  • Obtained at least 40% in two (2) other learning areas.
  • Obtained at least 30% in three (3) other learning areas.
  • No more than 1 learning area with less than 30%.

Requirements for tertiary studies

A learner can achieve a National Senior Certificate on one of three levels for entry into tertiary studies, namely

a) Higher Certificate
b) Diploma
c) Degree studies

To pass the NSC with entry to Higher Certificate study you need to achieve at least

~ 40% in English
~ 40% in any TWO (2) other subjects.
~ 30% in TWO (2) additional subjects.

To pass the NSC with entry to diploma study you need to achieve at least

~ 40% in English
~ 40% in THREE (3) other subjects. (Excluding Life Orientation)
~ 30% in Afrikaans First Additional Language.
~ 30% in TWO (2) other subjects

To pass the NSC with entry to degree studies you need to achieve at least:

~ 40% in English
~ 50% in FOUR (4) of the following subjects:
  • Accounting; Business Studies; Geography;
  • History; Life Sciences; Mathematics;
  • Mathematical Literacy; Physical Science and Visual Arts.
~ 30% in Afrikaans First Additional Language.
~ 30% in Life Orientation.

If a learner achieves 50% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution, he/she may achieve 30% in one of the listed subjects in which a 50% is required.
